my eight-year-old boy

You.
My half-grown boy who's too-ornery for his own good...what do I do with you?  You relish the contrary.  You rejoice in opposition.  You are my very antithesis.  Case in point:  the smile that you refuse to share:
If it bubbles up inside, you hide it, swallow it, and put on your steel-faced glare.  When you successfully irritate me with this scheme,
 then you laugh.
Sometimes I wonder what's going on in that head of yours....

....and I've decided that the tough exterior is only a shell around a young man who is learning to hold his own--as alien as it seems to me at times.  And at times you even show evidence of a little sweetness--when you kiss me good-bye before school, or hold still while you let me hug you.
We love you and all your little man ways, and we are praying that the Lord will transform these qualities into something akin to steadfastness, obedience, and strength that's rooted in Him.  Whatever you do in life, let it be for the glory of God.  And let Him be the one to rule you and direct your path as you seek to please Him.
We love you, Buddy.  And don't forget to smile. ;)
