2011 Advent Activities
I've had this basket ready to go for a while...I think it was worth the prep to have a more relaxed December. We're doing the Advent Jesse Tree book (red one in picture) as a devotional every day, and some of our activities will follow that theme of the day (which are Old Testament prophecies pointing to the coming Messiah), and others will be Nativity-related or just for fun. Each day we'll have a Jesse tree symbol to put up (relating to the lesson), and a tiny envelope with our fun activity of the day. There are Christmas books, Nativity activities and little craft kits in baggies that I've already put together so they're ready to go...I think I'm more excited than the kids! Here's our list:
1. Open and read Christ is Born, decorate tree
2. Read about the first sin, have apple snack with green gummy worms (apple/snake symbol)
3. Read about Noah's ark and the rainbow, draw rainbow with sidewalk chalk on black paper
4. Read about the call to Abram, make indoor tent and pretend to be camels
5. Open felt Nativity toy, have a tea party
6. Read about Jacob's ladder, assemble a ladder craft
7. Read about Joseph's coat of many colors, make watercolor coat craft
8. Make cookies (peanut butter raisin balls), eat with sugar cookie flavored tea
9. Assemble/deliver goodies to neighbors (probably some M.&.M snack mixes with this poem)
10. Christmas hymn sing with jingle bells, open/watch Nativity movie with popcorn
11. Open & read The Crippled Lamb, attend church Christmas concert
12. Read about Josiah finding the Law, make miniature scrolls
13. Peppermint Day! Open/read The Legend of the Candy Cane, drink peppermint tea and play with red-sparkle-speckled white peppermint play-dough
14. Read about the lion & lamb prophecy, make lion & lamb felt finger puppets
15. Chocolate Day! Play with edible chocolate play-dough studded with mini chocolate chips
16. Christmas lights tour--bring flashlights, popcorn & cookies for the car ride
17. Paint ornaments--crosses and hearts
18. Read about the prophecy of the new covenant, make felt hearts with Jeremiah 31:33
19. Open & play with Nativity Go Fish
20. Candle-lit tea party
21. Go sledding (or cold-weather running), drink hot chocolate with marshmallows
22. Read about the Christmas star, make star ornament
23. Bedtime snack in PJ's by the tree
24. Christmas Eve service, celebration with family
25. Christmas Day! Morning celebration at home, attend church, travel out to celebrate with grandparents
May you be blessed with a meaningful December celebrating the birth of our Savior!

Look at your neatly organized laundry basket of goodies!!! I'll confess to a large Hobby Lobby sack of miscellany at the moment. ;o) And I'm seeing ideas I can borrow to fill in the gaps like sledding (come on snow!!) and edible chocolate play-dough (which would be a hit with me and them!). ;o) Have fun making special memories with your bunch!
I love how organized you are and look forward to hearing how the month full of great activities goes!
