Today was operation acclimation. After a 4-hour nap for Jude and a 2-hour nap for Calvin, there was still plenty of crabbiness in the house, but we are well on our way to normalcy after a fun-packed week away. Here are some details:
Highlights: The 11-hour derby to kentucky went super well--it only took us 3 stops each way. We had a great time re-connecting with our aunt & uncle & 4 great cousins who helped out SO much with the kids, I felt extremely rested and pampered. We got to explore the Louisville Slugger Factory, Science Center and Zoo. We also saw Churchill Downs (Kentucky Derby) and University of Louisville. After a few days in Louisville we travelled south to our aunt & uncle's lake house to grill out, water ski, and try some new sports--wakeboarding for Andy and slaloming for me--And Cami tried skiing for the first time! We all got up just briefly. Calvin overcame his fear of water and got in the lake to swim and we even talked him into tubing with Cami, Andy and I all together.
Lowlights: the day before we left we had a massive water leak from our upstairs a/c unit (thankfully it all dried and the only thing we have left is to clean the carpet). 5 minutes till takeoff the kids' toilet wouldn't flush right (and with our superior flush-judging skills, we were convinced it was another buoyant plastic ball--but just today we were able to auger the unknown through without a $130 plumber this time). We had patches of screaming here and there on the trip, but overall the boys handled the exhaustion very well--this was truly an answer to prayer. The ride home was less than enjoyable, especially with the carseat disassembly at the end (why, oh why did I forget to check Jude's diaper?!). But all these speedbumps added to our little family adventure...we decided there will be a lot more roadtrips in the future.
Laughs: 5 minutes into our 11-hour car ride, Cami innocently asks, "Are we almost there?" Calvin had Jude squealing and belly-laughing towards the end of the endless trek home. In an attempt to not stop another time (as we unfruitfully stopped at the request of Calvin's guts needing to be emptied), we found ourselves en route with said 3-year-old squatting over a plastic bag. We never did get it to work...perhaps we needed the famous coffee can from my mom's childhood days of roadtripping.
